SOUTH AFRICA—PARTNERSHIPS
Pick n Pay is the second largest retail supermarket in South Africa. It caters to the high end market in fresh produce. The company has committed itself to assisting the emergent small scale farmers, who had previously been marginal in the fresh produce sector in the country, to access stable markets by purchasing their goods, if they can meet the set standards for fruit and vegetable quality and quantity.
It is important to note that this is a business relationship, and Pick n Pay will only buy if the products are competitive in terms of price and quality. They have now become interested in assisting the farmers in some material ways to ensure that they will meet these standards.
